              Anna Smith Papers

              The Anna Smith Papers contain several documents prepared by Anna Smith relating to the Mende language. One item is a Mendi-English dictionary. It is a typed copy and is 189 pages in length. Typed copies of the Gospels of Mark (twenty-six pages) and John (thirty-seven pages) are included. There are several copies of the Gospel of Luke. One is hand written and one is typed (fifty pages).

              In addition, there is an eighty-six page typed copy of a grammar guide by M. Eaton entitled "Studies of the Mende Language."

              This accession contains the typed transcripts of interviews and conversations concerning the history of social change in Kori and Bumpe Chiefdoms in Sierra Leone. There are 148 total interviews, but several individuals gave more than one interview. The manuscript is 902 pages in length. The data presented here was used in the preparation of a 1970 Ph.D. dissertation written at Boston University entitled, "A Socio- historical Analysis of Modernization and Related Mission Influences in Two Chiefdoms in West Africa, 1875-1940.

              Reeck, Darrell L.

              This collection contains items from a scrapbook that has been disassembled. Photographs from Sierre Leone and the Philippines are included. None of the photographs are dated, and few are identified. There is also a photo of Luther Burtner as well as his application to become a missionary. The collection also includes a Passport issued for Burtner to leave the Philippines.There are several news clippings that make reference to the death of Joseph Caulker, an African student brought to the United States by Burtner. All are undated. His wife, Jennie Light Burtner, wrote an extensive Diary (1904) describing in detail their trip to Shanghai ,Philippines, Egypt, Jerusalem, and England. There are also several notes which are inserted in the diary.

              This collection is made up of administrative material from the Foreign Missionary Society and its various mission fields. It also includes material regarding the 1898 Sierra Leone massacre of missionaries and the trial of Daniel F. Wilberforce for cannibalism.

              This collection is made up of the administrative material from the Board of Missions. It also includes the records of the World Mission Division, the Division of Home Missions and Church Extension and its various departments and mission fields, the National Missions Division and the Mission Advance Program. The collection is made up of six series. Although there is some material from 1862 and the 1970's, the bulk of the material is from 1946 to 1968.

              The Evangelical United Brethren Church is one of the predecessor denominations of The United Methodist Church. This collection is made up of the administrative material from the Women's Society of World Service. It also includes the records from the Local Branches, Quadrennial Conventions, World Evangel, Literature Department and the Society's area's of emphasis Christian Social Relations. Missionary Education, Missionary Education for children and Youth, and Spiritual Life. The collection is made up of nine series.

              The Robert Thomas Parsons Collection contains both a complete copy and a partial copy of Parsons' Ph.D. dissertation from the Kennedy School of Missions of the Hartford Seminary Foundation. The first folder contains biographical data and a photograph of Parsons from a collection of his papers at Hartford Theological Seminary. A complete manuscript of the thesis, titled "The Function of Religion in an African Society", is collected in two volumes. A partial collection of the thesis containing sections III, IV, V, VI, and VII is collected in two volumes and marked with a logo from the Department of World Missions of the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

              Parsons, Robert Thomas

              The Samuel George Ziegler collection contains largely materials on missionaries and overseas experiences in Sierra Leone, Puerto Rico, China, the Philippines, and Japan of the United Brethren Church from 1752 to 1966. Seeing as Reverend Ziegler was the Associate Secretary of the Division of World Missions from 1921 to 1958, there are two copies of unpublished works on the History of Overseas Missions of the United Brethren Church, including a final copy, as well annual reports and correspondence. Two maps are included in this collection, one of China and one of the Philippine Islands. Missionary personal accounts are comprised in the collection, in addition to photographs of thirty-seven missionaries abroad.

              Bishop Sparks correspondence concerns Sierra Leone from 1966 until 1973. The oral history interview was conducted as part of the Center for the Study of Evangelical United Brethren History, Oral History Program. This program was part of the EUB Heritage Project. The interview was conducted by John R. Knecht on February 21, 1981, in Sacramento, California. There is one cassette tape with this interview as well as a twenty-one page typed transcript.
