Anna Smith Papers

The Anna Smith Papers contain several documents prepared by Anna Smith relating to the Mende language. One item is a Mendi-English dictionary. It is a typed copy and is 189 pages in length. Typed copies of the Gospels of Mark (twenty-six pages) and John (thirty-seven pages) are included. There are several copies of the Gospel of Luke. One is hand written and one is typed (fifty pages).

In addition, there is an eighty-six page typed copy of a grammar guide by M. Eaton entitled "Studies of the Mende Language."

John Balmer Showers Collection

This collection contains papers related to John Balmer Showers. The bulk of this material includes writings by Showers. There are three folders of short typed pages. Some are on selected topics such as faith, Pentecost, stewardship and service, evangelism, the home, and the preacher. Other writings are greetings, welcomings, or dedications prepared by Showers on special occasions such as anniversaries, dedications, and conference meetings. The remaining writings are tributes or memorials to A. B. Statton, Elizabeth Ann Powell, Harold C. Urschel, Sam Stanrod, and Walther Murth.

Also included is a booklet kept by Showers when he was a student at Berlin University. It contains a listing of courses in German. There is a certificate of appreciation present to Showers from Otterbein Press in 1946 and an honorary degree diploma presented to him from Indiana Central College in 1947 are part of this collection. An essay Showers wrote on his father-in-law, Edmund S. Lorenz, is part of these papers. Some work Lorenz did on the hymnal book questionnaire can be found in the same folder. Finally, there is a scrapbook entitled, "Memories of My Years at Otterbein Press." This contains photographs of Showers and staff members, as well as articles written by Showers.

John Gordon Howard Papers

This collection contains much that is relevant to the history of the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Included are various essays, publications, clippings and reports related to the Church. These encompass many subjects, including the faith of the Church, the activities of the church in Howard's time, and the eventual union between the Evangelical United Brethren and the Methodist Churches to form the United Methodist Church in 1968. Related to this topic and of particular interest is an issue of The Evangelical Challenge which speaks vehemently against the merge. Howard. This includes speeches and articles about him.

There is some correspondence to and from Howard and his family. There is also some information about his father, A.T. Howard, who was also a bishop of the Evangelical United Brethren, including a poem and some quotations by him, and an essay and an article about him. There are a few photographs in the collection as well, and a few notes that seem to have been made by Howard. 1873. The writer of this diary is an unknown woman. There is also a manuscript entitled A Key to the Holy Scriptures and to the most essential Knowledge of the Christian Rules of Life printed in 1830. There are two documents relating to the one-hundreth anniversary of Benjamin Hanby's classic Christmas song, "Up On The Housetop."

This material contains general administrative files from the World Division of the General Board of Global Ministries. The material holds Division minutes both of the various committees and of the staff, correspondence with Bishops, and with missionary institutions around the world. In addition to administrative functions there is information on the overseas educational institutions, autonomous church developments, building programs, and the Crusade program, and other scholarships from the World Division. This material holds a variety of administrative and support information as well as information about the general programs of the World Division. There are structural and design blueprints for mission site buildings from around the world are in the Blueprint series. Records dealing with the work of the Evangelical Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church in modern day Dominican Republic are located in two series. Gift processing, legal program, and Property deal with records related to gifts, financial bequests and property held by the Division. Editorial decisions and committee oversight are found in the New World Outlook series. The Office of Edwin Fisher and of Ralph Diffendorfer contain records related to their work; Fisher as a director of the work in several geographic regions and Diffendorfer as the director of the World Division during the 1930s and 1940s. Subject files contain general correspondence reflecting the various programs of the World Division. In addition to material relating to the general programs and functions of the World Division there are also records pertaining to autonomous church developments among the former mission sites, funding of churches, reports and training of missionaries, and reactions to critics of the Division's programs.

Samuel George Ziegler Collection

The Samuel George Ziegler collection contains largely materials on missionaries and overseas experiences in Sierra Leone, Puerto Rico, China, the Philippines, and Japan of the United Brethren Church from 1752 to 1966. Seeing as Reverend Ziegler was the Associate Secretary of the Division of World Missions from 1921 to 1958, there are two copies of unpublished works on the History of Overseas Missions of the United Brethren Church, including a final copy, as well annual reports and correspondence. Two maps are included in this collection, one of China and one of the Philippine Islands. Missionary personal accounts are comprised in the collection, in addition to photographs of thirty-seven missionaries abroad.

George Edward Epp Papers

This collection contains a copy of the Evangelical Missionary Speaker, which was compiled by George Edward Epp. This fifty-four page booklet contains missionary poems, readings, and exercises prepared for programs on Children's Day and Foreign Day. It was published and distributed by the Missionary Society of the Evangelical Church in Dayton, Ohio. The collection also includes two additional items in German. The first is a hand-drawn booklet depicting the work of the Sunday School . The second item is a photo album depicting the buildings and leaders of the Berlin-Christuskirche.

John W. Kiracofe Collection

This collection contains John Kiracofe's notes about various ministers and church histories. A great deal of this material deals with genealogy. There are photographs and negatives depicting the Deardroff home, Anson Brazee, and Bertha E. Deardroff . There is a booklet by Bertha E. Deardorff about her own family genealogy. Pamphlets, bulletins and newspaper clippings about the EUB church are also included. The collection contains a short play written by Thelma Moyer Starner, event programs from the Pennsylvania Conference, a publication titled The Chatterbox and two certificates.

This collection contains one scrapbook of materials related to the Miami, Ohio, Branch of the Woman's Missionary Association of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. The scrapbook contains programs, correspondence, reports, articles, and clippings from magazines. In the interest of storage and scrapbook is disassembled and placed in file folders.

Quentin Charles Lansman Papers

Quentin Lansman papers includes some of Lansman's notes and drafts for his dissertation at Northwestern University, titled An Historical Study of the Development of Higher Education and Related Theological and Educational Assumptions in the Evangelical United Brethren Church: 1800-1954. Also includes numerous sermon notes from the 1950s and 1960s. Also included are photographs of an Evangelical Church meeting and families in Hagerstown, Maryland, from prior to 1925, possibly before 1920, along with turn of the century post cards from Corydon, Indiana, the original state capital of Indiana. Also includes images of a commemoration service at the grave of early-19th century church figure John G. Pfrimmer (1762-1825). Personnal correspondance of Evangelical Church Rev. Henry Fuessner of Cleveland, Ohio is also included-among them are letters from General Secretary Bishop Sylvanus Charles Breyfogel (1851-1934). The letters range from 1928-1931.

There are numerous records and minutes from the 1960s for the United Campus Christian Fellowship, an ecumenical collegiate organization resulting from the merger of the campus Christian Fellowships of the Disciples of Christ, Evangelical United Brethren, United Church of Christ, and United Presbyterian U.S.A Chuches into a single national organization. At least one chart of its national structure, from its related churches down to college campuses and local congregations, is included. Handouts, reports, policies, and other materials related to Campus Fellowship make up the remainder of the collection. Images of events and student activities in several collegiate Christian fellowships are included, as well as a strategic plan titled "Operation Nehemiah" from the Hillcrest Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada, from the late 1950s-early 1960s. A panorama photograph of the 1958 Evangelical United Brethren Student Conference at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, is in a separate box.
