The records of the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women (COSROW) encompass its beginnings as a general agency and continues up to the early twenty-first century. Its primary role is advocacy for women both within and beyond United Methodism. Over time advocacy would be expanded beyond just women roles and acceptance as leaders. Responsibilities in their defined mission include workplace and sexual harassment, equitable leadership roles and benefits in relation to gender and race, legislation to General Conference such as changing language usage in the Book of Discipline to codify improvements for women and social issues relating thereof. These are but a few examples of its advocacy work for the denomination.

In order to support, empower and educate the denomination on all levels within COSROW’s defined responsibilities can be found in the Advocacy, Audio-Visuals, Connectional Ministries and Printed Matter series. Here the researcher will find a plethora of avenues by which COSROW fulfills its mission through multimedia, mailings, newsletters such as the Yellow Ribbon and The Flyer, correspondence, creation and submission of petitions to General Conference along with organizing and informing delegates, worship resources reflecting various women’s concerns and expressions, pamphlets, workshops and monitoring seminaries and all the boards and agencies throughout the connectional structures within the larger church.

COSROW is highly organized in the sense of resourcing and utilizing its membership both on the general church and annual conference levels. The creation of a talent bank in which to draw upon not only for its own qualitative work but also to network skilled individuals is but one of the creative ways COSROW optimizes its impact on the church despite its small staff. The records illustrate how the role of monitoring became a defining part of its work. Social justice issues related to women and children are amply documented in the files. The genesis of using non-gender specific language issue to promote inclusiveness within United Methodism can be traced here as well.

The Financial and Administration series reflects how COSROW ran its organization and implemented its mission on a daily basis. Minutes of the various committees, reports on the work and funding of the commission, along with membership records and the General Secretary’s office files make up the primary documents in this series. A researcher will notice multiple files on the same topics. The reason for this duplication rests upon the original organizational structure the commission utilized for an egalitarian General Secretariat rather than a typical top-down corporate management structure found in other United Methodist agencies. Later COSROW adapted the latter structure out of necessity. On another note it should be noted that COSROW often recorded their meetings in various media platforms which became the official record.

This collection contains a variety of handwritten essays dealing with Sunday schools, class meetings, historical notes on the charitable society and the denomination, the episcopacy, sermon preparation, and church polity. There are nine essays. In addition, there is a unique leather case in the collection in good condition size 6 x2 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and has a 36 inch strap which wraps around the case to secure it. It is referred to as a sermon case and may have been designed to fit into a saddlebag. The case is filled with a collection of Domer's sermons on a variety of topics and texts. Most of them a readable. Only two are dated. Both were preached at New Hamburg, Pennsylvania in 1876.

Four diaries kept by Amanda Johnson during the time she was a missionary are contained in this collection. The dates on the diaries are September 25, 1864-January 29, 1869; February 13, 1869-November 6, 1873; May 1871-July 22, 1871; and August 10, 1877-September 27, 1883. The 1871 dairy records her experiences in the Himalaya Mountains.

This collection contains a typed copy of the travel journals of William Colbert. It recounts his work as a Methodist preacher in parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, and Virginia. There are ten volumes in this collection. The total work is approximately 1,120 pages in length. There is no notation about who completed the transcription of these journals.

Three bound diaries. The first few pages of the third volume also contain notes created by John Roesner. Article clipping from 1927 Evangelical Messenger that sums up his service to the church.

This collection contains seven folders of stereoscopic photographs that were used primarily for Sunday School lessons in the early 20th century. A portion of the photographs are stamped with the corresponding age level lesson and date. With one exception, all of the photographs illustrate Bible lands with appropriate notations. There is one slide that documents a meeting of the Methodist Episcopal Church's bishops at an unknown location. Underwood and Underwood published most of the slides though there are a few from H. C. White Company.

There are two items in this collection. The first is a Seth Thomas Clock that was built in 1876. The clock was removed from what is known as the William Butler bungalow in Bareilly, UP, India around 1970 by Dr. Robert Petersen at the suggestion of Dr. Stanley Thoburn, deceased. Due to the patent date, it is highly probable that some other early Methodist missionary actually owned it.

The second item in this collection is a book written by William Butler entitled THE LAND OF THE VEDA. The book is autographed in the front by Clemetina Butler who was William's third wife.

Her correspondence throughout the 1930s and 1940s illuminate her teaching in China. The correspondence from the 1960s reveal that she was in Hong Kong pursuing the same interest in teaching. Other materials include prayer diaries, journals, several printed publications, photographs, and a Chinese script.

This collection consists of a lecture on United Brethren Church in Christ hymnology, a scrapbook and an autobiographical manuscript from Edmund S. Lorenz. The scrapbook consists of a collection of his verses to hymns; manuscripts of his published articles in The Religious Telescope and The Bible Teacher, and two addresses to the American Congress of Churches.

The collection spans the years 1805-1928, with most of the material dating from before Fifield's death in 1859. The bulk of the material consists of letters, sermons and various documents. It also includes oil portraits and daguerreotypes of Fifiled and his wife, Celia. A few of the sermons date from Fifield's years as a secular banker; this indicates that he probably continued to preach somewhat during those years. It should be noted that several of Fifield's sermons are written on the back of correspondence which he received. Many of the documents are in poor condition and should be handled carefully, as should the oil paintings which are both cracked and flaking.
